- Two of the region's three cities are run by Liberal Democrats - Newcastle since 2004 and Durham since 2003
- Lib Dems are the largest party on the new Northumberland Unitary Council, and are the main opposition to labour on the new Durham County Unitary Council
- In May 2008's elections Lib Dems gained a net 36 seats including 12 in Northumberland, 22 in Durham, 3 in Newcastle and one in Gateshead. We lost only two seats, one each in Hartlepool and North Tyneside. A full analysis of votes is not yet complete, but in County Durham our votes was up, whilst both Labour and Conservatives were down - the Conservatives slumped to 12.9%. No Boris Johnson or David Cameron effect here!
- In May 2007 Liberal Democrats won 23% of the Council seats (182 Councillors) compared to 46% for Labour, 15% Conservatives and 13% independent
- In the 2005 General Election we received 23% of the votes in the region - compared to 53% for Labour and 20% for the Conservatives (a swing of 6% from Labour to Liberal Democrat since 2001)
- The only party in the region to take a seat from Labour in the Euro elections in June 2004 when – Fiona Hall was elected as the region's first Liberal Democrat MEP
- We are the REAL alternative to Labour in the North East - In most of the region it is a two horse race between us and Labour.
