- On the Council, there are 22 Lib Dem Councillors - and no Conservatives. We form the opposition to Labour - challenging their inflation busting Council Tax rises, questioning how money is spent in different areas, and calling for a more localised approach so that local people have a say in how their area is run.
- At the last General Election in 2001, the Liberal Democrats came 2nd to Labour in the constituencies of Gateshead East & Washington West and Blaydon - where Labour's majority was slashed from 16,505 to 7,809 - making it one of the country's key Labour - Lib Dem battlegrounds in this election.
- In last year's elections Liberal Democrats took 35% of the votes across the whole of Gateshead, compared to Labour's 49% - and in the Blaydon Constituency we overtook Labour, taking 47% to Labour's 42%.
