Voting in Blaydon in 2004
Voting in Local elections in Blaydon last year: Lib Dem 47%, Lab 42%, Con 9% (others ~2%)
Liberal Democrats are the only Real Alternative to Labour here in Gateshead:
  • On the Council, there are 22 Lib Dem Councillors - and no Conservatives. We form the opposition to Labour - challenging their inflation busting Council Tax rises, questioning how money is spent in different areas, and calling for a more localised approach so that local people have a say in how their area is run.
  • At the last General Election in 2001, the Liberal Democrats came 2nd to Labour in the constituencies of Gateshead East & Washington West and Blaydon - where Labour's majority was slashed from 16,505 to 7,809 - making it one of the country's key Labour - Lib Dem battlegrounds in this election.

  • In last year's elections Liberal Democrats took 35% of the votes across the whole of Gateshead, compared to Labour's 49% - and in the Blaydon Constituency we overtook Labour, taking 47% to Labour's 42%.

  • In this May's General Election, John McWilliam & Joyce Quin, two of Gateshead's long serving Labour MPs are retiring. Now, voters in Gateshead could replace them with new Liberal Democrat MPs. Click here for a list of all the Liberal Democrat candidates in Gateshead
